Grahas — the actors
The nine grahas are the forces at work in a chart. Each carries its own nature — the Sun authority, the Moon the mind, Saturn discipline and time.
Vedic Astrology · Jyotish
Vedic astrology maps the sky at the moment of your birth and reads it for patterns and timing. This page explains how a chart is built and read — plainly, and without fear.
This is the sky right now. Your chart is the same sky, the day you were born.

Jyotish comes from jyoti — light. For thousands of years it has been read as the science of light: of the Sun, the Moon and the planets, and of how their movement mirrors the rhythm of a human life.
What it is
Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas, the limbs of Vedic knowledge. Its classical foundations are texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and Varahamihira’s Brihat Jataka.
At its centre is the kundli, or birth chart — a picture of where the Sun, the Moon and the planets stood at the exact time and place you were born. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, measured against the fixed stars, which is why your Vedic sign often differs from your Western one.
To draw one, three things are needed.
How a chart is built
Every reading comes back to the same three questions: which planet, in which sign, in which house.
The nine grahas are the forces at work in a chart. Each carries its own nature — the Sun authority, the Moon the mind, Saturn discipline and time.
The twelve signs colour each graha. The same planet behaves differently in fiery Aries than in watery Cancer.
The twelve houses map the areas of a life — self, wealth, home, marriage, career. A graha’s house shows where its story plays out.
The Navagraha
Seven visible planets and the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu. Shown here in their traditional arrangement, with the Sun at the centre.
No graha is simply good or bad. Its strength, its sign and its house decide whether it brings its gifts easily or asks for effort first.
The twelve rashis
Each sign belongs to an element and is ruled by a graha. Together they describe the manner in which a planet expresses itself.

Reading time
Vedic astrology is known above all for timing — for seeing which periods open doors and which ask for patience.
The sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It sets the order of the houses — which is why an exact birth time matters.
The sky is further divided into 27 lunar mansions. The Moon’s nakshatra at birth says much about the mind, and starts the dasha clock.
A 120-year cycle of planetary periods. Each mahadasha, and the shorter periods within it, brings its graha’s themes to the fore.
Where the planets are moving now, read against the birth chart. Transits show what the present moment is stirring.
Saturn’s passage over the Moon sign and the signs either side — about seven and a half years of lessons in patience and responsibility.
Worth knowingOften feared, it is read as a time of maturing, not of ruin.
Charts drawn from the main one for a single area of life — the Navamsa (D9) for marriage and inner strength, the Dashamsa (D10) for career.
Upaay · remedies
Chanting the mantra of a graha to steady its influence — the gentlest and most widely given remedy.
Giving what a planet signifies, on its day — food, cloth or help to those who need it.
Many remedies are simply ways of living: respecting elders for the Sun, keeping promises for Saturn, kindness in speech for Mercury.
Simple, practical steps from the Lal Kitab tradition, meant to be done at home without ritual expense.
A gem strengthens its planet, so it is chosen only from a full reading of the chart — never by sign or colour alone.
Questions
What people most often ask about Vedic astrology, answered plainly.
Vedic astrology, or Jyotish, is India’s traditional way of reading the sky at the moment of birth. It reads a birth chart through the nine grahas, the twelve rashis and the twelve bhavas, and is known above all for timing — which periods open doors, and which ask for patience.
Western astrology usually measures the zodiac from the seasons; Vedic astrology measures it against the stars — the sidereal zodiac — so a planet often falls one sign earlier than in a Western chart. Jyotish also reads closely from the Moon, the 27 nakshatras and the dasha periods.
A kundli, or janam kundli, is the birth chart: where the Sun, the Moon and the other grahas stood among the twelve signs and twelve houses at the moment and place of birth. In North India it is drawn as a square cut into twelve houses, the ascendant at the top. Cast your own kundli free.
The ascendant — the sign rising in the east — moves through all twelve signs in a day, about one every two hours, and it sets the order of every house. A wrong time can move a planet into another house. Clear astrological guidance cannot be provided without the time of birth.
Vimshottari dasha is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods, started from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. Each mahadasha, and the shorter periods within it, brings its graha’s themes to the fore — which is how a chart is read for when, not only what.
Before a marriage, two charts are compared by Ashtakoota — eight kootas read from the two Moons: varna, vashya, tara, yoni, graha maitri, gana, bhakoot and nadi, worth 1 to 8 points each and 36 in all. It is read from the Moon alone, so it is one reading among several, not a verdict on a marriage. Match two kundlis free.
Mangal dosha — being “manglik” — is said to arise when Mars sits in certain houses of the chart, most often the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, and in some traditions the 2nd. It is read for marriage, and the tradition also describes what cancels it, so it is judged from the whole chart rather than on its own.
Sade Sati is Saturn’s passage over the Moon sign and the signs either side of it — about seven and a half years. It is often feared, but it is read as a time of maturing, patience and responsibility, not of ruin.
A gemstone strengthens its planet, so it is chosen only from a full reading of the chart — never by sign or colour alone. Strengthening a graha that is already difficult in a chart is exactly what the tradition takes care to avoid.
